New TGV Inoui designed by nendo
The Japanese design studio Nendo and the French architecture and design company AREP have collaborated to redesign the fifth-generation TGV high-speed train in France. This new design incorporates the colors of the French national flag: red, white, and blue.
Nendo and AREP began working on the design in 2018, undertaking a comprehensive overhaul from the train’s exterior to its interior furniture and seating. The new design is based on Alstom’s Avelia series and will be introduced under the brand name “TGV Inoui.”
The front of the train has been crafted into a more aerodynamic shape to enhance energy efficiency, featuring a long, black oval design. The exterior is painted in a bright white color to help reduce cooling energy consumption during summer.
The interior space features soft curves and natural tones, with seats and lighting inspired by pebbles smoothed by water. The seats are ergonomically designed and made with 3D knit fabric, allowing them to adapt flexibly to various body shapes. They are also designed to be thin, maximizing legroom while maintaining comfort.
Inside the cabins, the colors of the French flag are used to distinguish seating classes: first-class seats are red, while second-class seats are blue. Every seat is equipped with lighting and charging ports for added convenience.
Another notable feature of the new TGV Inoui is its revamped dining car, “Le Bistro TGV Inoui.” This two-story space offers self-service food and beverages on the lower level, while the upper level serves as a comfortable lounge area.
The newly redesigned TGV Inoui is scheduled to begin operations in 2026. The entire train is built with over 97% recyclable materials, emphasizing sustainability, and is designed for easy maintenance and cleaning.
