The New Yorker 100th Anniversary Chess Set

Swedish design brand PRINTWORKS has introduced a special chess set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The New Yorker. This unique chess set reinterprets iconic elements of New York City as chess pieces.

The set reflects the city’s architectural landmarks and everyday life. The illustrations were created by Christoph Niemann, who has been designing covers and cartoons for The New Yorker since 1998. The queen piece represents the Statue of Liberty, while the knight is depicted as a pigeon, a familiar sight on New York streets. The pawns take the form of the city’s iconic yellow cabs, steadily moving forward, much like taxis navigating the streets. The rook is shaped like the Brooklyn Bridge, and the bishop is inspired by the Chrysler Building. The king is designed to resemble a sophisticated gentleman, embodying the signature elegance of New Yorkers.

PRINTWORKS, founded in 2017, is a Swedish brand that creates a variety of home decor items, including chess sets, photo albums, board games, and portable lamps. The brand focuses on sustainable production methods and durable product design. The chess set is available for purchase on the PRINTWORKS official online store for $120.
